Washington:
The United States crossed another sinister milestone in the coronavirus on Monday as the number of deaths from the virus exceeded 130,000, according to a count by Johns Hopkins University.
The country recorded 2,888,729 cases of COVID-19 and 130,007 deaths at noon in Washington, the university reported.
The hardest hit country in the world, both in number of confirmed cases and in deaths, the United States has experienced a resurgence of the disease since June which has forced several states to suspend their staggered economic reopenings.
On Saturday, the number of new daily infections hit a record high of 57,683.
When the number of deaths crossed the 100,000 mark on May 27, President Donald Trump said he was satisfied that the number of new infections was decreasing, even though experts had warned of a possible resurgence.
Despite the worsening trend, White House officials said the US economy, which had plunged in March and April due to the closings, would not be closed again.
