New Delhi:
Government said today that “attempts are being made to misinterpret” comments made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after an all-party meeting yesterday on the violent confrontation between Indian and Chinese soldiers in the east from Ladakh earlier this week.
“With regard to the transgression of the LAC (actual line of control), it was made clear that the violence in Galwan on June 15 was due to the fact that the Chinese side was seeking to erect structures just in front of the LAC and refused to give up such actions, “said the government. in a statement today.
The centre’s postscript on Prime Minister Modi’s comments came amidst opposition attacks that the government had not fully explained the situation along the LAC which ultimately led to the violent confrontation, leading to 20 soldiers sacrificing their lives for India.
Congressman Rahul Gandhi tweeted this morning: “The PM ceded Indian territory to Chinese aggression. If the land was Chinese: 1. Why were our soldiers killed? 2. Where were they killed ? “
A day after the Galwan Valley incident, the foreign ministry said the violent confrontation had taken place following an attempt by the Chinese side to “unilaterally change the status quo”.
The opposition alleged that Prime Minister Modi had not fully explained what the change in status quo meant if Chinese troops had not entered Indian territory. “If no Chinese troops have crossed the LAC region into Indian territory, why does the declaration of Foreign Minister Jaishankar refer to the reestablishment of the status quo ante?” Congress chief P Chidambaram tweeted this morning.
In today’s statement, the government said that “the Prime Minister’s comments that there was no Chinese presence on our side of the LAC concerned the situation because of the bravery of our armed forces” .
“The sacrifices of soldiers from the 16 Bihar Regiment foiled the Chinese side’s attempt to erect structures and also authorized the attempt to transgress at this point in the LAC that day,” the government said.
“What is an Indian territory is clear from the map of India. This government is firmly and resolutely attached to this. Insofar as there is illegal occupation, the MPA (multiparty meeting) has been informed in detail of the way in the past 60 years, more than 43,000 km2 has been ceded in circumstances that this country knows well. It has also been made clear that this government will not allow any unilateral changes to the LAC, “said the government. today.
“At a time when our brave soldiers are defending our borders, it is regrettable that unnecessary controversy is created to lower their morale. However, the prevailing feeling at the all-party meeting was unequivocal support for the government and the forces armies we are convinced that the unity of the Indian people will not be compromised by reasoned propaganda, “he said in the statement.
