A day after the World Health Organization congratulated Dharavi of Mumbai for breaking the chain of COVID-19 transmission, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Saturday congratulated everyone responsible for this achievement.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Friday in a virtual press conference that Dharavi, among other places in the world, is an example that shows that while the epidemic is very intense, it can still be mastered.
“It is essential to emphasize community engagement and the basic principles of screening, tracing, isolation and treatment of all those who are ill to break the chains of transmission and suppress the virus”, did he declare.
In a tweet in Hindi, Mr. Gandhi said: “WHO has commended our country’s Dharavi model for preventing the spread of coronavirus infections. The entire team responsible for this achievement of Dharavi, especially the residents, deserves applause. “
Spread over an area of 2.5 square kilometers, Dharavi is one of the largest slums in the world. It has 6,500,000 inhabitants.
In April, the doubling rate of COVID-19 cases in Dharavi was 18 days, it gradually improved to 43 days in May and slowed to 108 and 430 days in June and July, respectively, according to official data. .
To date, 2,359 cases of COVID-19 have been recorded in Dharavi, while 1,952 patients have recovered.
Currently, there are only 166 active cases in Dharavi.
