Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking for his intervention in the release of activist Varavara Rao, arrested in connection with the Bhima Koregaon case.
Mr. Rao was transferred to Sir JJ Hospital due to the deterioration of his health.
In his letter on Monday, Mr. Chowdhury wrote: “In this country, an 81-year-old person has languished in prison for years without knowing his crime, now he is mentally disoriented, without medical assistance, his name is poet Varavara Rao. “
“Please free him from his incarceration, free him from prison, at this age, he cannot be a threat to one of the strongest countries in the world, India,” he said in his letter. to Prime Minister Modi.
You can please intervene in this matter and save his life, otherwise our future generations will not forgive us, he asked PM Modi.
Varavara Rao was arrested in November 2018 with five other people, for their alleged links with the Maoists and for inciting violence. On January 1, 2018, violence in the village of Bhima Koregaon in the Pune district left one dead and several others injured, including 10 police officers.
Violence broke out after some people, apparently with saffron flags, bombed stones on cars heading to the village to commemorate 200 years of Bhima-Koregaon war on New Year’s Day.
Police filed 58 cases against 162 people.
