Guwahati:

Congress tabled a censure motion against the government led by Biren Singh Manipur a day after nine lawmakers withdrew their support for the government. If the government fails to survive, the BJP will lose the northeastern state where it formed a government in 2017 despite the fact that Congress became the largest single party in the elections.

The censure motion was tabled after the National People’s Party or NPP led by Conrad Sangma – a key ally of the BJP in the northeast – formed an alliance with the Congress of Manipur.

The new alliance, called the Secular Progressive Front or SPF, also has the support of a Trinamool Congress and an independent deputy.

The SPF, headed by former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh, urged the governor to convene a special assembly session for the ground test.
