New Delhi:
Before the June 19 elections in Rajya Sabha, Congress accused the BJP of engaging in corrupt electoral practices on Friday and petitioned the Election Commission to demand action.
A congressional delegation led by party leader Ahmed Patel met with the Election Commission and delivered a memorandum with its complaint.
He alleged that his deputies in Gujarat were poached and harassed by the BJP government by reopening old cases.
“We hereby request instructions from the Electoral Commission”, it reads in its memorandum to the EC, “that no files are reopened and no FIR or files are registered by the competent authorities, including the Gujarat police, against all the deputies of the INC in the state of Gujarat., without requesting the approval of this commission. “
He also alleged that the Gujarat police unnecessarily harassed congressmen at the BJP instance in false, fabricated and self-created stories.
Congress also sought to conduct the biennial elections of Rajya Sabha fairly and to guarantee the safety of its deputies.
Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said a delegation of party leaders would meet with the EC and ask it to highlight cases where its legislators in Gujarat have been attracted and intimidated by the ruling BJP.
The election of four Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat will take place on June 19.
Singhvi said the party was confident of victory in the elections and would win two seats according to his strength in the Legislative Assembly of Gujarat.
Fearing poaching of its deputies, Congress transferred them to state resorts as well as to neighboring Congress-ruled Rajasthan.
“Our victory is certain, our numbers are sufficient,” Singhvi told reporters at an online press conference.
“Our means are clean and pure, our strategy is strong, but that should not prevent me from exposing to you those who do exactly the opposite,” he said.
He alleged that “not everyone has engaged in politics at the gutter level and not everyone is engaging in corrupt practices”.
