Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) became the first company in the shipping industry to be certified by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for the GreenCo Silver Rating.
CSL has now joined a handful of companies like IndianOil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, ONGC, GAIL, Indian Railway that have already been certified.
The GreenCo rating is based on the evaluation of a company’s performance according to various parameters such as energy efficiency, water conservation, renewable energies, greenhouse gas emissions, waste management, materials conservation, recycling and recyclability, green supply chain, product management and life cycle assessment, innovation for environment, green infrastructure and ecology.
“GreenCo’s silver rating will enable CSL to chart a long-term roadmap for environmentally sustainable economic growth,” he said in a statement.
The largest commercial shipbuilder in India is currently building a prestigious native aircraft carrier for the Indian Navy.
Industry experts say shipbuilding can make a huge contribution to the vision of making India a five trillion dollar economy by 2024.
