Beijing:
Chinese state media targeted the US government over the weekend as many American cities were taken over by protests and unrest, clashes comparing the unrest with the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong.
Beijing has long been exasperated by critics of western capitals, particularly Washington, over its handling of the pro-democracy protests that rocked Hong Kong last year.
And as unrest broke out across the United States over racial inequality and police brutality following the death in the arrest of an unarmed black man, Chinese government spokesmen and official media launched attacks on the US authorities.
Chinese media also released video clips suggesting that Hong Kong police were “restrained” from the actions seen in the United States.
“The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, once called the violent protests in Hong Kong” beautiful views. ” … American politicians can now take advantage of this view from their own windows, “Hu Xijin, editor of the nationalist tabloid Global Times, wrote on Saturday.
It was “as if the radical Hong Kong rioters were somehow sneaking into the United States and creating a mess like last year,” he added.
China has insisted that “foreign forces” are to blame for the unrest in Hong Kong, where pro-democracy protesters – described by Beijing as rioters – have marched by the millions since June of last year and have are often hit by the police.
Beijing sparked outrage and concern earlier this month with a plan to impose a law on Hong Kong which it said was necessary to protect national security and fight “terrorism”, but was condemned by pro-democracy activists and Western countries as a new attempt to destroy the city’s unique freedoms.
After President Donald Trump announced that he would deprive Hong Kong of his special privileges, a comment published on Sunday in China Daily – a spokesman for the ruling Communist Party – said that American politicians dreamed of “victimizing” the China.
“Better to give up on that dream and come back to reality,” he said.
“Violence is spreading across the United States … American politicians should do their job and help solve problems in the United States, instead of trying to create new problems and problems in other countries. “
“Lack of transparency”
Round trips to Hong Kong have exacerbated U.S.-China tensions, which were already high on a number of issues – including trade and the coronavirus pandemic, on which Trump has accused Beijing of lack of transparency.
As violence erupted in the United States over the weekend, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying also targeted Washington.
“I can’t breathe,” she said on Twitter, with a screenshot of a tweet from US State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus who had criticized the Chinese government for her politics in Hong Kong.
Hua quoted the words that George Floyd had heard many times before his death – after a police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes – which triggered the current unrest in the United States.
Over the weekend, the Chinese media also released video clips of the American violence, along with the hashtag “How restrained the Hong Kong police are” on the Weibo Twitter platform.
A clip published by People’s Daily on Sunday compared the recent on-screen arrest of CNN correspondent Omar Jimenez, which covered the unrest in the American city of Minneapolis last Friday, with scenes from Hong Kong police appearing to back off. the media last year.
The accompanying legend said that “the journalists used their professional identity to obstruct law enforcement”.
Hong Kong police have been accused by rights groups of using excessive force during last year’s pro-democracy protests.
