As congressional allegations that the government “cedes” India to China have intensified, the BJP has responded with a strong political allegation – that the Chinese are funding Congress. The BJP accused the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation of receiving donations from the Chinese Embassy in India. The party alleges that these donations were made in 2005-06.
Congress chief Sonia Gandhi is the president of the RGF and her board of directors includes Dr. Manmohan Singh, Rahul Gandhi, P Chidambaram and Priyanka Gandhi.
The BJP alleged that, according to the 2005-2006 annual report, the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation received a donation from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China. The donation was included in the list of general donors.
“Did the UPA government at the time accept a bribe from the Chinese? Isn’t it true that after taking this donation, the foundation recommended a free exchange with China, which was strongly favorable to the Chinese, “said Foreign Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. .
Mr. Prasad also accused the UPA government of the time of not mentioning the donation anywhere in the government records. “Congress must answer that if it took money from the Chinese Embassy, how was it used?” he said.
Last week, the BJP also targeted the Gandhi family for meeting Chinese officials and “having a secret pact”. The party referred to an image showing Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi during a meeting with officials from the Chinese Embassy in 2008.
It should be noted that in opposition between 2004 and 2014, many BJP leaders also met with members of the Chinese Communist Party. An official meeting between then-party president Rajnath Singh and a CCP delegation even took place at the BJP headquarters in 2007.
Congress responded to these allegations and called them a diversionary tactic.
The party said that the donation referred to had been made transparently and that all the details were listed on the website. It is also part of the foundation’s annual report. Congress has declared that pro-government foundations like the Vivekanand Foundation have also received donations from different sources – this does not mean that they are anti-national.
The BJP has now accused Congress of counterpart and asked them to be clean. In a statement, the party asked the following questions:
