China gave a lukewarm response to India’s election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council on Friday, saying as a permanent member that it wishes to strengthen cooperation with all members newly elected from the supreme organ of the UN.

China has hampered India’s efforts to become a member of the powerful UN body for years, stressing the lack of consensus even though the other four permanent members, the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Russia has expressed support for the accession of New Delhi.

China has said in the past that there are great differences among members of the United Nations over Security Council reforms, arguing that a “comprehensive solution” must be found to accommodate interests and concerns. of all parties.

India, the approved candidate for the Asia-Pacific group of states, garnered 184 of the 192 votes cast in the Security Council elections on Wednesday.

With India, Norway, Ireland and Mexico will join the Security Council as non-permanent members for a two-year term starting January 1, 2021.

It is the eighth time that India has sat at the horseshoe-shaped table of the Council. Previously, India was elected for the years 1950-1951, 1967-1968, 1972-1973, 1977-1978, 1984-1985, 1991-1992 and more recently in 2011-2012.
