Chief Minister Amarinder Singh says ‘killers’ will not be spared after 111 people die from poisonous alcohol

Chandigarh:

Under opposition fire over the alcohol tragedy that claimed the lives of more than 110 people, Chief Minister of Punjab Amarinder Singh said today that no one would be spared if he was found accomplice of these deaths.

Calling the deaths of the tragedy “pure murder”, the chief minister said he would now allow the “killers” to get away with it.

No less than 111 people have died in the illicit alcohol tragedy that took place in Tarn Taran, Amritsar and Gurdaspur’s Batala.

The chief minister said he would end the alcohol mafia in the state.

“No one, whether a politician or a civil servant, will be spared if he is found complicit in the death of the spiers,” said the chief minister.

He said that the entire Punjab police force would crack down on the Mafia.

Promising the strictest measures in the matter, Mr Singh said: “111 deaths have occurred due to fake alcohol. The whole police force and the excise service have been put to work, and I want that this work will be completed within the next two days. “

“Some unscrupulous elements have taken advantage of the police focus on tackling the COVID pandemic to appease their greed at the cost of the lives of the Punjabis,” the chief minister said in a statement.

While the state government has been busy tackling COVID-19, which has claimed the lives of 449 people in the state so far, the liquor mafia seized the opportunity to gamble with the lives of our people, he added.

“This is outright murder, and the killers will not get away with it,” the chief minister said.

“They knew it could kill and yet they supplied / sold the poison to innocent people. They don’t deserve any mercy,” he added.

Singh said his government was with the families of those who died at the time of their grief and said it would spare no effort to ensure justice.

Blasting the opposition for “exploiting” the tragedy for its “small political interests”, the chief minister said now was not the time to play politics but to support the government in its efforts to eliminate the Mafia who engaged in such acts.

He targeted the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on its dharnas against the rattles tragedy, and asked how it would help fight the Mafia or support bereaved families.

The Chief Minister pointed out that such tragedies have taken place over the years in states under different political regimes.

The mafia and the criminals have no political affiliation, their only interest is to make money by hook or by crook, he said.

Mr Singh said 2019 saw three such tragedies, all in the BJP-ruled states of Assam, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, which have claimed more than 290 lives.

“In 2016, 16 people had died in Bihar, ruled by Janata Dal, while in 2015 Maharashtra, ruled by BJP, had seen 102 lives lost in Mumbai, and under the reign of Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, up to 167 people have died due to the consumption of fake alcohol, ”he added.

“Fake alcohol tragedies take place almost every year, but it has nothing to do with the ruling party in the affected state,” the chief minister said.

He urged the opposition to stop making politics over the lives of innocent Punjabis.

“Our people do not care which party rules the state, all they want is justice for those close to them, who have been victims of the greed of the alcohol mafia,” he said. Singh said, noting that Punjab had also witnessed similar tragedies under the SAD-BJP regime.

The Chief Minister urged the opposition to rise above political interests and fight for justice for the people.

Opposition parties have targeted the Congressional government on the dead hookers and demanded the resignation of the chief minister.

Two Congressmen Rajya Sabha, Partap Singh Bajwa and Shamsher Singh Dullo, petitioned the governor of Punjab for a CBI and ED investigation into the alleged “illegal” alcohol trade.
