PM should listen jan ki baat (people’s speech), Sukhbir Singh Badal said (File)

Chandigarh:

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to respond to the grievances of the farming community by speaking directly with farmer organizations as well as all other stakeholders.

In a statement, the SAD president said that farmers’ organizations rightly rejected the secretary-level talks proposed by the agriculture ministry because a bureaucrat could not offer anything on the table. “The secretary had called the farm leaders only to explain the Centre’s point of view,” he said.

“The Prime Minister must understand that a lot of water has flowed under the bridge. Farmers in Punjab and Haryana, in addition to other places, have taken the path of unrest at great risk to themselves during the pandemic because they are convinced the three recently “The agricultural laws enacted will destroy their future generations, ”he added.

Badal added that in such a situation, leaving out the intermediaries, the prime minister would have to step in and speak directly with the farmers as well as with other stakeholders, including all political parties. “This interaction should be followed by the abolition of the three agricultural laws and the introduction of new legislation protecting the interests of farmers.”

Sukhbir Singh Badal said that with regard to SAD, it represented a written assurance on the continuation of the central government’s supply of food grains in accordance with the Minimum Support Price (MSP), followed by legislation making a statutory law. “We also defend constitutional guarantees banning trade in food grains below the PSM,” he added.

He also announced that SAD will initiate the formation of a pro-farmer national front by coordinating with other like-minded regional parties to bring this demand to its logical conclusion.

Badal said he would take personal responsibility for the cause of Delhi’s farmers by meeting soon with representatives of like-minded regional parties.

“The PM should listen jan ki baat (people’s speech), which he also reflected as the chief minister of Gujarat when he recommended making the MSP a statutory right at the head of the advisory committee of senior ministers. Currently, it seems that the NDA government is shifting responsibility to private actors, ”Badal said.
