New Delhi:
Delhi police on Thursday indicted seven people in court in connection with the alleged murder of a local during the violence in northeast Delhi in February.
Delhi Police Crime Department has laid the charges before the Metropolitan Magistrate in the alleged murder of a 22-year-old man named Monis who died of head injuries sustained during the violence February 25.
According to the charge sheet, items such as lathi, danda (stick), talwar (sword) were recovered from the accused’s possession and Monis’ cell phone was also recovered from one of them.
The charges were laid under sections 147 and 148 (riot), 149 (unlawful assembly), 327 (intentionally injured), 436 (mischief by fire), 302 (murder), 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and the relevant sections of the Public Property Damage Prevention Act.
Offenses carry a maximum death penalty.
Monis (22), who worked as a laborer, was crossing the Brijpuri road on his way home when he was arrested and allegedly beaten by the crowd, according to the count of charges.
A further investigation against other accused was under way, the charge sheet said.
Violence broke out in northeast Delhi on February 24, leaving at least 53 people dead and dozens injured.
