New Delhi:
Congress on Wednesday urged the government to address the Indian prisoner Kulbhushan Jadhav to the International Court of Justice to file a petition for review against his death sentence in Pakistan.
Party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said that nothing can be expected from Pakistan.
“We must trust the Indian government. It must collapse to guarantee the granting of legal rights to Kulbhushan Jadhav,” he said.
“They (the government of India) should move heaven and earth, they should make requests to the ICJ, the case is not over. They should create a negative public opinion on a global scale way a helpless man cannot be allowed to exercise these rights., “he added.
Singhvi hoped the government would take action in the coming weeks rather than waiting for Pakistan to make amends.
He was questioned on reports from the Pakistani media that Kulbhushan Jadhav had refused to appeal to the High Court in Islamabad against his death sentence.
India said on Wednesday that Pakistan’s allegation that Kulbhushan Jadhav, sentenced to death in an alleged espionage case, has refused to appeal his conviction, is a “farce”.
Department of External Affairs spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said that Kulbhushan Jadhav had clearly been forced to refuse to file a review in his case, and called it a “brazen attempt” to scuttle even the inadequate remedy which he had.
“Pakistan’s claim that Jadhav, who is incarcerated in Pakistan’s custody, refused to open a petition for review is a continuation of the farce that has been at stake for four years,” said Srivastava.
