The CBI has resumed investigations into the horrific murder of a father-son duo after being tortured by police at the Sathankulam police station in Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu, officials said on Wednesday.

The CBI has dispatched a task force to carry out the investigation into which several members of the Tamil Nadu police are under the scanner and some have already been arrested by the state police, they said.

“CBI has registered two cases concerning the allegations of death in custody of two traders from Kovilpatti district at the request of the government of Tamil Nadu and a new notification from the Indian government,” said CBI spokesman RK Gaur. .

He said that the CBI had resumed the investigation into these cases, previously registered under crime number 649 of 2020 and crime number 650 of 2020 at the East Kovilpatti police station in Turicorin.

The team will seek custody of the accused, the sources said.

P Jayaraj and his son Beniks, who ran a mobile store, were arrested for “ violating ” lock standards during the hours of operation of their cell phone store.

Beniks and Jeyaraj died on June 22 and 23, respectively, after being tortured by Sathankulam police after their arrest on June 19.

The CB-CID is currently handling the case in accordance with the directives of the Madurai court of the Madras High Court.

So far, five police officers, including an inspector, have been arrested.
