New Delhi:

The CBI on Monday questioned the four defendants housed in Aligarh prison for their alleged involvement in the rape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit woman in a village in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

The CBI team had obtained permission from the court to question the defendants – Sandeep, Luvkush, Ravi and Ramu – who are in custody, they said.

CBI investigators also met with doctors from the Medical College and Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital, where the victim was treated after the alleged September 14 gangrap, they said.

The victim died of injuries while being treated at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi on September 29.

The district administration reportedly forcibly cremated the body deep in the night, denying the family permission to take it home for the final appropriate rites.

The administration’s allegedly callous attitude drew sharp remarks from the Allahabad High Court.

The issue turned into a major embarrassment for the government of Yogi Adityanath.

The BJP government transferred the case to the CBI after the controversy. The CBI has assembled a team that has already recorded statements from family members of the victim.
