British Prince Charles said recovery from coronavirus crisis represents a “reset moment” for the world and an opportunity to prioritize sustainability issues, as he made opening remarks at a meeting World Economic Forum (WEF) virtual tour.
The 71-year-old prince, who recovered after suffering mild symptoms of COVID-19, has championed environmental causes for decades, warning that global warming and climate change are the biggest threats to the ‘humanity.
He said that rebuilding the world from the devastating impact of the “terrible” coronavirus pandemic offers an opportunity for these environmental causes.
“We have a unique window of opportunity that is shrinking quickly to learn from and get back on a more sustainable path,” Charles said at the WEF meeting on Wednesday.
He said that the pandemic, which, due to closings and restrictions, has resulted in reduced industrial activity and displacement, has shown people that radical change is possible.
“We have a golden opportunity to seize something good from this crisis. Its unprecedented shock waves may well make people more receptive to grand visions of change,” he added.
His speech was part of a launch event for “The Great Reset”, a project involving the WEF and the Prince of Wales Sustainable Markets Initiative, aimed at rebuilding the economic and social system to make it more sustainable.
Unlike illness, there are solutions to climate change, said Charles, mentioning renewable energy and putting nature back at the center of people’s lives.
Using social media and a network of virtual hubs, WEF’s Great Reset aims to involve young people around the world to help develop practical solutions and mobilize them to work towards a more sustainable lifestyle.
“I can only encourage all of us to think big and act now,” said Charles.
