London:
Britain’s Prince William will launch a multi-million pound global prize on Thursday aimed at solving some of the world‘s biggest environmental problems.
The Earthshot Prize will award five million pound ($ 1.29 million) prizes each year for the next 10 years in the categories of nature protection and restoration, clean air, revitalization oceans, waste reduction and climate change.
Nominations will begin on November 1 before the first awards ceremony in the fall of next year.
William, Queen Elizabeth’s and second-to-the-throne grandson, said the change was essential over the next decade to help protect and restore the environment.
“By 2030, we really hope that we have made huge strides in solving some of the biggest problems facing the Earth,” Prince William, 38, will tell BBC Radio when interviewed Thursday with naturalist David Attenborough.
“I think urgency with optimism really creates action. And so the Earthshot Prize is really about harnessing that optimism and urgency to find solutions to some of the world‘s biggest environmental problems.”
The British royal family has campaigned for a host of environmental issues, with William’s father Prince Charles speaking for decades about the impact of climate change and the importance of conservation.
Kensington Palace said the award was inspired by US President John F. Kennedy’s Moonshot, which he said since landing on the moon in 1969 has been synonymous with ambitious and groundbreaking goals.
He said the awards would provide at least 50 solutions to the world‘s environmental problems by 2030.
The Earthshot Prize Council will be set up to decide the winners with its members to include names from the environmental, philanthropic, business, sports and entertainment worlds. They will be announced later Thursday.
The project has more than 100 partners around the world who will submit applications from November 1, the statement said. The 2021 awards ceremony will take place in London and then in various cities around the world.
The Earthshot Awards were first announced last December.
