Brasilia:
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who was quarantined for almost a week after being tested positive for the new coronavirus, announced Monday that he plans to take another test because it “cannot stand” being isolated .
The test result, which is scheduled for Tuesday, “should be released in a few hours, and I will be looking forward to it because I cannot stand this routine of staying at home. It is horrible,” said President Bolsonaro in a phone. interview with CNN Brazil, from his official residence at the Alvorada Palace in Brasilia.
Since the start of the crisis, the far-right president has rejected the gravity of the epidemic and criticized the containment measures ordered by the governors of the Brazilian states.
In an interview, President Bolsonaro said he is “very well” and has no fever or breathing problems. Nor has he lost his sense of taste, one of the most common symptoms of COVID-19.
“Tomorrow, I don’t know if the new test will confirm (the virus), but if all goes well, I will go back to work. Of course, if it is the reverse, I will wait another day,” said the 65-year-old, adding that he hoped to resume activities within a week at most.
“Otherwise, everything is fine. We work by videoconference all the time and we are doing our best not to let things pile up,” he said.
Brazil is the second most affected country in the world, after the United States. As of Monday, 72,833 people have died out of 1.8 million confirmed cases.
President Bolsonaro said last Thursday on Facebook Live that after feeling bad, he started taking one hydroxychloroquine tablet every day.
The drug, originally tested to fight malaria, has been used as a treatment for COVID-19 in many countries – but its effectiveness has not been officially proven and the problem is deeply divisive in the world of science.
“I took (hydroxychloroquine) and it worked, and I’m fine, thank God. And let those who criticize it offer at least one alternative,” he told Facebook Live.
