Sindh [Pakistan]:
A 17-year-old Hindu girl, who was allegedly raped a year earlier, committed suicide in Pakistan’s Tharparkar district after apparently being blackmailed by the accused who raped her and is released on bail.
The teenager committed suicide in the early hours of Wednesday by jumping into a deep open well in the village of Dalan-Jo-Tarr near the town of Chelhar, Dawn reported.
“The girl was raped by three men in mid-July 2019 and the defendants in the case are on bail,” the victim’s father and other relatives told reporters in Mithi.
The family alleged that the girl had committed suicide after being blackmailed and harassed by influential defendants who raped her.
The accused not only took turns raping the girl, but also allegedly filmed the ordeal after taking her to a house.
According to the then-Tharparkar (SSP) Chief Superintendent of Police (SSP) Abdullah Ahmedyar, the first medical reports confirmed that the girl had been sexually assaulted.
People from different walks of life, including human rights activists Samtra Manjani, Bheem Raj and others, strongly condemned the incident and demanded harsh action against those who forced the teenager to take a step extreme.
Residents of the Meghwar community, as well as workers from various parties, have warned that they will organize protests in Thar and other areas against these growing incidents of crimes against women.
The case is another example of the deplorable conditions of minorities in the state of Pakistan.
