New Delhi:

Congress accused the BJP on Thursday of assassinating democracy in Manipur by its sinister efforts to stay in power.

Congress chief spokesperson Ajay Maken alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) violated all statute rules and used all unethical tricks, including the misuse of investigative agencies , to stay in power in the northeast state.

“Since the proclamation of the election results for the 11th Legislative Assembly of Manipur, the BJP has made grim efforts to install its ruling party.

“The BJP broke all the rules of the law, used all the unethical tricks of the game and abused the first investigative agency to retain power in Manipur. And throughout the process, they assassinated democracy “, he said in a statement.

Mr. Maken pointed out that after the proclamation of the results of the election of the 11th Assembly in Manipur, which caused a breach of mandate, the Congress obtaining 28 seats, BJP 21, NPP four, NPF four, LJSP one, AITC one and one independent, the big old party was not invited by the governor to form the government.

Instead, the invitation was addressed to the BJP, which has built a post-electoral alliance with the other parties, he said.

The President of Congress said that the recent political unrest in the northeast state came from the main ruling party itself, when three BJP deputies resigned, as well as four ministers from the National People’s Party (NPP).

This, he said, was mainly due to the “undemocratic” functioning of the government led by the BJP, where all decisions would have been made by chief minister N Biren Singh, without consulting ministers and members of parliament.

Ajay Maken also accused the Speaker of the Manipur Assembly of not having taken a timely decision on various petitions tabled under the 10th Schedule to the Constitution.

He alleged that the speaker had adopted a series of orders according to a selection method, disqualifying three deputies who supported the “censure motion” proposed by Congress, while an anti-defection petition against three other lawmakers of the great former party, which continued to support the BJP government, was dismissed.

Congressman alleged that speaker, one day before Rajya Sabha’s election, without even advising the only member of the India Trinamool Congress (AITMC), had disqualified him and deprived him of his rights to vote.

In total, four deputies who allegedly voted for Congressman Rajya Sabha’s election candidate were disqualified and four, who supported the BJP, were allowed to retain their seats in the assembly, he said.
