The woman from Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, suffered from multiple fractures, paralysis and a gash to her tongue in the gruesome assault that drew parallels with the Nirbhaya gang rape case in 2012.
The woman’s body was transported to her village of Hathras, about 200 km from Delhi, after midnight. As his family and the villagers suspected that the UP police wanted to perform the last rites at this time, in the middle of the night, they insisted that it was “against their tradition”; the woman’s father begged the police to take her home and cremate her in the morning.
The four attackers, men from the upper castes of the woman’s village, are in prison. They will now also be charged with murder.
Hans Raj Hans, who represents the reserved constituency of northwest Delhi, said the crime had “shocked” him and the whole country, and he hoped the “culprits would receive a lesson so that a message could be heard. sent across the country that any injustice to women will not be tolerated. “
Amid mounting outrage, Hathras police claimed the cremation was carried out with the consent of the family and some members were present. It turned out to be an uncle – not his parents – who was called out and who was cremated.
UP police, who are under surveillance for alleged misconduct during the case, have been accused of precipitating the cremation in a desperate attempt to cover up.
