Bengaluru:
Bengaluru will lockout from 8 p.m. July 14 to 5 a.m. on July 23 to slow the spread of the coronavirus, Karnataka BS Yediyurappa chief minister said on Saturday. Detailed locking instructions will be announced on Monday.
All essential services, including the supply of milk, vegetables, fruit, medicines and groceries, will continue without interruption, the chief minister said in a tweet.
“I call on people to cooperate with the government, follow all the guidelines, take all precautionary measures and help us contain the pandemic,” he tweeted. He said the decision was made with expert suggestions to limit the growing number of cases.
Mr. Yediyurappa has complemented the efforts of ASHA workers, doctors, medical personnel, police, officials and the media who are working to control the spread of the virus.
Previously, the sprawling city had been divided into eight zones which were overseen by the ministers.
Despite the spike in coronavirus cases, the state government had previously declared against any reimposition of the lockout, beyond the Sunday lockdown, which had been announced for this month. This was reiterated by the ministers just a few days ago.
The Bengaluru urban district has the highest number of cases in Karnataka, accounting for more than half of the new cases in the state in the past few days. He has 16,862 infections.
To date, a total of 36,216 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the state, which includes 613 deaths and 14,716 discharges, according to a government bulletin.
Several other states have extended the lockout amid growing cases. Bengal had announced a closure until July 31 and suspended flights from the most affected cities until July 19.
Nagaland has also extended the lockout until July 31. Guwahati will also be locked until July 19.
