Jamalpur (West Bengal):
West Bengal BJP leader Dilip Ghosh on Saturday received black flags and his convoy was allegedly pelted with stones by supporters of the ruling Trinamool Congress in the Purba Barddhaman district.
The TMC, however, denied the allegation. The incident happened when Mr. Ghosh traveled to the Jamalpur area to interact with farmers on agricultural laws.
Supporters of the two parties clashed, as a result of which police personnel had to resort to a lathi charge to bring the situation under control, a policeman said.
“As soon as my convoy entered Jamalpur, I was shown black flags and my convoy was pelted with stones by TMC activists who carried their party flags. The TMC does not believe in democracy and it does. is just a reflection of that, ”Mr. Ghosh said. .
“I am used to such incidents but the people of the state will give them an appropriate response”, he added.
Local TMC leadership, however, denied the accusation and said the farmers “must have protested against agricultural laws, which are against their interests.”
Farm laws have become the last flashpoint between the BJP and the TMC in the state.
The TMC and other opposition parties protested against the three farm laws, saying these “anti-farmer measures” would “destroy” the agricultural sector.
The BJP-led government at the Center, however, has claimed that agricultural laws would free farmers from the clutches of middlemen and allow them to sell their produce where they want at remunerative prices.
