Beijing:
Beijing has partially lifted a weeks-long lock imposed on the Chinese capital to prepare for a second wave of dreaded coronavirus infections after three million samples taken in two weeks, officials said.
Dozens of residential complexes across the city have been closed, and authorities have launched a mass test campaign to eliminate all remaining cases.
A large majority of them are linked to the vast Xinfadi market in the south of the city, which supplies around 80% of Beijing’s fresh produce and meat.
The foreclosure was eased on Tuesday for seven apartment buildings after residents tested negative for the virus, officials said at a briefing on Friday. The remaining blocks are always locked.
Eleven new cases of the virus in Beijing were announced on Friday, bringing the total number of infections in the capital to 280 since the June 11 outbreak.
Food market workers and visitors, nearby residents, restaurant workers and delivery people were the main targets of the mass tests as fears began to mount over the hygiene of the food supply in Beijing.
