New Delhi:
Kanta Prasad, owner of the popular “Baba Ka Dhaba” restaurant in Malviya Nagar, south Delhi, has filed a complaint against Instagram influencer Gaurav Wasan for embezzlement, police said on Sunday.
Mr Prasad, 80, had risen to fame after a video of him tearfully recounting the desperation for months since the lockdown widely shared on social media platforms recently.
Ironically, Mr Prasad’s desperation surfaced when Gaurav Wasan captured the restaurant owner falling apart as he spoke about his struggles in a video shared on YouTuber’s social media account.
In his police complaint, Mr Prasad said Gaurav Wasan shot his video and uploaded it, asking the public on social media to donate money to the restaurant.
He further alleged that Wasan “purposely and deliberately only shared his bank details and cell phone numbers and those of his family / friends with donors and collected huge donations through various payment methods, namely a bank account / wallets without providing any information to the complainant “.
The owner of the food seal also accused the YouTuber of not providing him with details of the financial transactions.
“We received the complaint yesterday at the Malviya Nagar Police Station and the case is under review. No FIR has yet been registered in the case,” said police chief Atul Kumar Thakur.
After the video went viral, Baba ka Dhaba was the cynosure of many eyes across the country, including showbiz celebrities who posted appeals asking people to go there and cook for themselves.
A day after the heartbreaking video, #Babakadhaba was all the rage on Twitter and the restaurant was inundated with more customers than it had seen in its 30 years of operation.
