A day after the Emmy nominations were announced, the Television Academy informed the top nominees on Wednesday that the September ceremony will be held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The announcement was expected given the restrictions and lockdowns imposed since the virus outbreak that affected the entertainment industry.
The Emmys – the television equivalent of the Oscars – will take place on September 20 and will be the first major awards show in Hollywood since the start of the coronavirus crisis.
Late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel is set to host the festivities on ABC.
In the letter sent to the selection of nominees, the content of which was confirmed to AFP by an Academy spokesperson, the organizers said they were forced to make the difficult decision to hold the ceremony online given circumstances.
“Aside from not being able to come together in one place, we also recognize that our world is going through a difficult time in many ways,” according to the letter signed by the producers of the event and Kimmel.
“We are going to produce an event filled with warmth and humanity, which celebrates the power of television to bring us together and help us shape our world,” they wrote.
The letter said the organizers would work closely with the nominees, filming them at home and elsewhere, to make sure they stood out on the big night.
“We’re going to make you look fabulous – we’re exploring the cutting edge of technology to enable us to use good cameras and good lighting and look forward to working with you to produce your unique moments ‘on screen’,” the added letter.
As for the dress code, the letter said, given the informal theme of the ceremony, the nominees could decide what to wear.
“If you want to be in formal wear we would love it, but also if you are in UK and it’s 3am maybe you want to be in designer pajamas and record from your bed! “
“We want to work with you to style your moments, but we want you to guide us on your comfort level – where you want to be, who you want to be with, what you want to wear, etc.”
