An assistant professor at Dibrugarh University in Assam was arrested today for allegedly uploading pornographic content to the Internet, said a senior police officer.
The assistant professor of mathematics, in his late thirties, was arrested on the basis of a file filed by the director of the university alleging that he had downloaded the video on a pornographic site, said the director of the Dibrugarh district police, Sreejith T.
“In the video that went viral on the Internet, an educator-like person is seen in a compromising position with a woman. We raided her home on Thursday evening and grabbed her laptop,” said police.
“During her interrogation, the educator confessed to having filmed pornographic content with a woman in a hotel in Guwahati three years ago,” said the SP.
The camera used for the recording was seized after a raid in the Amolapatty area of Dibrugarh, he said.
The accused claimed that the woman in the video was not a university student, said the officer, adding: “It was cross-checked with professors and other institute authorities.”
The assistant professor was dismissed under the relevant articles of the Indian Penal Code and computer law, he said, adding that the accused will be brought before a court.
“When we obtained information about a viral video from the assistant professor, we sent him a justification notice on June 26 in order to obtain an explanation within five days. His response came on June 30 but after finding it unsatisfactory, we have filed an FIR against him, “The registrar of the University of Dibrugarh, Harin Mahanta, said.
An investigative committee has been set up to examine the matter and, according to university rules, if an accused remains in police custody for more than 48 hours, he will be suspended from his duties, said Mahanta.
