The Tinsukia District Administration in Assam on Sunday denied reports that the Baghjan gas well fire had spread to other areas, and said a fire in farmland in about two km from the Oil India Limited site, had been caused by burning bushes. .
A media section reported that the Baghjan fire spread to nearby farmlands, causing panic among the population.
A well in Baghjan spewed gas uncontrollably following an eruption on May 27 and caught fire on June 9, which has yet to be sprayed. An attempt to plug the damaged well failed on Friday.
“The alleged news is completely false and said fire occurred in agricultural land near the Maguri Matapung Beel, about 1.5 to 2 kms from said Bagjan oil well, and was set on to clear farmland from bushes. “, a statement released by the district administration said.
“The district administration calls on everyone not to fall into such false news and to maintain peace and law and order in the region,” he added.
District officials and police are on site and are monitoring the situation.
Meanwhile, efforts are underway to shut down the well at the earliest, OIL said in a statement on Sunday.
He also claimed the company faced protests and continued blockages at several of its wells and sites on the ground, resulting in heavy production losses since June.
Operations have been halted at 12 oil and five gas wells since May 27.
Assessments and impact studies of the eruption, as well as the fire in villages and nearby forest areas, by various agencies are underway while the CSIR-North East Institute of Science & Technology (CSIR-NEIST ) and IIT-Guwahati have completed data collection which is currently being analyzed and interpreted.
District administration damage assessment investigations are also underway in Tinsukia and Doomdooma circles and 2,736 families have been interviewed as of Saturday, the statement said.
