Guwahati:
Assam’s government will propose a center to open schools and colleges in a “graduated manner”, Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday as he made a number of announcements, including making admissions to government institutions free for all.
The announcement came a day before an online meeting between the Union’s Ministry of Human Resources Development and public education services on the coronavirus crisis.
“We have devised a standard operating mode by which we will propose to the ministry to start classes every two days for different classes. However, classes can start from class 6. Opening classes gradually, distancing Social classes will not be possible online. Village courses are not possible, so in a week, each level between 6 and 12 will have at least two days of schooling, “said Sarma on Sunday.
On Sunday, the government of Assam also decided to make free admissions to government colleges, technical institutions and schools.
Previously, only students whose parents had an annual income of less than Rs 2 lakh received free education benefits.
Mr. Sarma also declared that with immediate effect, it will be compulsory for any school, whether governmental or private, to teach the Assamese language as a subject between classes 1 to 10. However, in the valley region of Barak dominated by Bengali, Bengali will be compulsory and in the Bodoland region, Bodo will be compulsory.
Schools and colleges across the country were closed in March before a national lockdown imposed by the central government to slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
