Jaipur:
Rajasthan’s chief minister Ashok Gehlot met with Governor Kalraj Mishra on Saturday, hours after two deputies from a regional party that had withdrawn support from the Congressional government announced that they would support the administration.
“Governor Kalraj Mishra met with Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot at his official residence on Saturday evening. It was a courtesy meeting. Mr. Gehlot informed the governor of the measures taken by the state government against the Coronavirus pandemic. The meeting lasted 45 minutes, “said the governor. office said in a statement in hindi.
Earlier, Gehlot tweeted that members of the construction industry had announced their support.
“The two deputies from the Bharatiya tribal party (BTP) announced their support for the government after meeting their executive officials and discussing their demands,” Gehlot tweeted in Hindi.
He was seen receiving a letter of support from MPs in photos shared by his office.
The two MPs had become an interesting light in the political drama over the revolt of Deputy Chief Sachin Pilot this week when they published a video on social networks, which went viral, alleging that they were detained against their will in the luxury hotel where Mr. Gehlot dropped deputies from Congress to make sure they didn’t return.
The loss of the two deputies would have reduced the chief minister’s staff as Congress sought to protect his herd from the Sachin Pilot rebel camp.
Pilot said he had 30 MPs who are ready to walk with him if necessary from the Rajasthan government – enough to bring down Mr. Gehlot’s government. But Gehlot says he has 109 loyal MPs – pushing him just above the 101 mark he needs to stay chief minister.
With such a narrow lead, each member counts. One of the construction deputies, Rajkumar, told GalacticGaming on Thursday that they were staying in Rajasthan, were not part of Team Pilot and planned to meet with Mr. Gehlot “to discuss certain matters”.
The head of the construction industry, Mahesh Bhai Vasava, wrote to his deputies on Monday telling him that the party should remain neutral in the event of a ground test in the assembly. MEPs were asked to ignore any ground tests.
The two legislators then declared that they were with Ashok Gehlot. “There is some confusion. Right now, we are with the government. But we will make a final decision after talking to our leaders,” they told GalacticGaming.
