New Delhi:
US President Donald Trump erupted Thursday in a tirade of unsubstantiated claims he was swindled into winning the US election as the vote count in battlefield states showed Democrat Joe Biden to be steadily approached victory.
“They are trying to steal the election,” Donald Trump said in an extraordinary statement to the White House two days after the polls closed.
Trump’s rant came as the country’s still-undeclared returns showed Biden was striving for victory.
Joe Biden, 77, was only one or at most two states from the battlefield of securing a majority to take the White House. Donald Trump, 74, needed an increasingly unlikely combination of victories in several states to stay in power.
In comments to reporters in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, Biden said “we continue to feel very good.”
“We have no doubt that when the count is over Senator (Kamala) Harris and I will be declared the winners,” he said.
The big shift to mail-in ballots this year reflected voters’ desire to avoid risking exposure to Covid-19 at crowded polling stations during a pandemic that has already killed more than 230,000 Americans.
