An Indian army officer and three soldiers, including a BSF agent, were killed in the line of duty during a major counterterrorism operation along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.
Three terrorists were also shot dead as part of the ongoing counterterrorism operation in the Machil area of the North Kashmir district, they said. This is one of the biggest meetings in union territory since April.
The encounter began after the military and BSF noticed suspicious movement near the LoC and challenged the intruders, leading to a shootout in which the terrorists were eliminated. A BSF agent was killed in action.
“Constable Sudip Sarkar lost his life during the operation in the Machil sector. Reinforcements received from the Indian army, the joint operation still ongoing,” said the Border Security Force.
The shooting ended around 4 a.m., when the army moved in as reinforcements. The terrorists were detected again at 10:20 a.m. this morning, about a mile from the LoC, which led to another shootout in which an army officer and two jawans killed dead. Two other jawans who were injured were evacuated.
The operation is still ongoing, officials said.
