Olivos, Argentina:
Argentine football legend Diego Maradona is expected to be discharged from hospital on Wednesday, his doctor said, eight days after undergoing surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain.
Maradona “has a signed discharge” and could return home, Leopoldo Luque told reporters outside the Olivos clinic in Buenos Aires.
“It’s coming out very soon,” the doctor said.
Luque previously posted on Instagram a photo of himself hugging the 60-year-old man, who was wearing a bandage on his head.
Maradona is expected to continue her rehabilitation in Tigre, 30 kilometers north of Buenos Aires, near the home of her daughter Giannina.
“Diego has gone through perhaps the most difficult time of his life,” his lawyer Matias Morla said on Wednesday, adding that it was a “miracle” that the clot “which could have cost him his life was detected” .
“What we need now is to live together and to be surrounded by healthcare professionals,” said Morla. “With the doctors and his family, Diego will be as he should be: happy.”
The former Argentine captain, winner of the World Cup, underwent surgery last Tuesday to remove a clot lodged between his brain and his skull.
He had looked sick during a brief appearance on October 30 to mark his 60th birthday in the stadium of Gimnasia y Esgrima, the team of the Argentine Primera Division that he trains.
He seemed to have difficulty walking and didn’t stay to watch his team’s game.
The following Monday, he was taken to hospital in La Plata, where the club is based, suffering from symptoms of anemia and dehydration.
Tests revealed the blood clot, after which Maradona was transferred to a specialized clinic in the capital.
Maradona has been hospitalized three times in the past 20 years with serious health problems – including two potentially fatal – due to his addiction to drugs and alcohol.
Now drug-free, Maradona remains addicted to alcohol.
Last week, his doctor said the football icon would require prolonged treatment at a clinic with different specialties than the current one.
Maradona’s daughters, Dalma, Giannina and Jana, visited her daily at the clinic.
His eldest son, Diego Jr, who lives in Italy, announced on social media last Thursday that he had tested positive for Covid-19 and therefore could not travel to Buenos Aires.
Alongside Brazilian Pelé, who turned 80 last month, Maradona is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time.
