A government official working on the front lines of West Bengal’s fight against the coronavirus died Monday morning from a highly infectious disease, leaving behind a husband and four-year-old son.

Debdatta Ray, the 38-year-old assistant magistrate from the Chandannagar Subdivision in Hooghly District, reported symptoms similar to those of Covid earlier this month and was advised to quarantine at home in the Dum Dum area , in the north of Calcutta.

She developed severe respiratory distress on Sunday and was rushed to Shramjibi Hospital in Serampore, where she lost the battle against Covid-19 the next morning.

Debdatta Ray was responsible for trains carrying migrants in the Hooghly district of Bengal and in the camps where they were accommodated upon arrival.

She had been applauded for her humane and sensitive management of the difficult situation.

Monday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences via Twitter, saying: “Grieved to hear about the untimely death of Debdutta Ray … A young WBCS (EXE officer), she was at the forefront, struggling against the pandemic and has shown exceptional dedication in the performance of its duties. “

Ms. Banerjee also reached out to Ray’s husband.

Lichu Bagan resident in Dum Dum, Debdatta Ray was an officer in the 2010 West Bengal Civil Services (WBCS) group and posted as a Block Development Officer (BDO) to Purulia before being transferred to Chandannagar as assistant magistrate. His colleagues are shocked and devastated by his death.

The juniors said she was the kind of officer who would not hesitate to make them a cup of tea.
