Gariaband:
An adult male elephant was electrocuted after coming into contact with a live wire on Monday in Gariaband district in Chhattisgarh, an official said.
With this incident, three jumbos have died from electrocution in the past six days in the state.
The latest death occurred on Monday in a paddy field in Paragaon village, under the forest range of Dhawalpur, when a herd of 22 to 25 elephants was passing through the area, said Mayank Agrawal, divisional forestry officer in Gariaband Division.
After being alerted about this, forestry staff rushed to the scene and the autopsy was done, he said.
“In the past, no elephant movement has been reported in the area. This large herd of pachyderms has ventured into the area from the neighboring Odisha border via the Udanti Sitanadi Tiger Reserve,” he said. said Mr. Agrawal.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the tusker came into contact with an 11 KV power line, which was suspended low above the field, and electrocuted itself, he said.
Residents said they previously reported to electricity department officials that high-voltage lines were low in the area, but no action was taken, he said.
“At first glance, it appears that the negligence of part of the electrical department led to the death of the elephant. We will file a complaint about this and further action will be taken accordingly,” said the manager.
He added that the electrical department should ensure that the 11 KV and 33 KV transmission lines are laid at the prescribed height and not below.
Earlier on Friday evening, an elephant died from electrocution after coming into contact with a live wire laid by poachers to trap wild boars in the Mahasamund district.
Another jumbo died after coming into contact with an electric wire illegally laid on a farm by a farmer in Raigarh district on September 23.
In the past four months, 11 elephants have died in separate districts of the state due to various causes, including electrocution.
