Annu Tandon said there was a “misalignment among leaders at the state level”.

Lucknow:

In a setback to Congress, top leader and former Unnao deputy, Annu Tandon, resigned from the party’s main makeup on Thursday citing “a misalignment with state-level leadership”.

In a statement released to media, Ms Tandon said she sent her resignation to party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and asked her to accept it immediately.

A by-election for the Assembly seat of Bangarmau in Unnao, the Lok Sabha constituency that Ms Tandon represented in 2009, is scheduled for next month.

While stating that she had continually received the warmth and guidance of both Congress Presidents Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi during her 15 years of association with the party, Ms Tandon said there was a “misalignment between leadership at the state level “and that she has not seen their support which has been coming to her for several months.

“The state leadership of the party has focused solely on the management of social media and self-branding and is oblivious to the deep divisions within the party and voters that it has thus created,” Tandon said. .

She said ducks were being sprayed on her and her associates by a few local, irrelevant and elected officials.

Calling it both “painful and disgusting,” she said the party leadership had not tried to stem it.

Ms Tandon said she raised the issue under the responsibility of UP Priyanka Gandhi, who ensured that the President of Congress was fully briefed on the situation, but that the matter was still not resolved.

My ideology and principles have been aligned with the top leadership of the party and my resignation does not change that, she said, adding that she would consult with her workers on the future path.
