Berlin:
Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday condemned the death of George Floyd, detained by US police, as a “murder”, saying that “racism is something terrible”.
“This murder of George Floyd is very terrible. Racism is something terrible. Society in the United States is very polarized,” she told national ZDF in an interview.
Asked about the role of US President Donald Trump in the unrest that ravaged the country, Merkel said she was trying to “bring people together, seek reconciliation,” the “political style of the American leader is very controversial.”
Merkel has been a sharp critic of Trump’s position, including his independent style which marginalizes international cooperation.
In a striking message to Trump after his electoral victory in 2016, Merkel linked his commitment to close ties to democratic values.
Any “close cooperation” must be based on the “values of democracy, freedom, respect for the rule of law and human dignity, whatever their origin, their skin color, their religion, their sex, their sexual orientation or their political beliefs, “she said at the time.
