New Delhi:

Air quality in the nation’s capital was recorded in the ‘moderate’ category this morning, while a government forecasting agency said it would likely become ‘bad’ by Friday 2 October.

Delhi recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 160 at 10:30 am, which falls in the moderate category. The 24-hour average AQI on Tuesday was 177.

An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered “good”, 51 and 100 “satisfactory”, 101 and 200 “average”, 201 and 300 “bad”, 301 and 400 “very bad” and 401 and 500 “serious”.

Favorable ventilation conditions are expected to keep Delhi’s IQA in the moderate category on Thursday, the Air Quality and Weather Research and Forecast System (SAFAR) said.

However, he said, the late retreat of the monsoon and the associated stagnant winds are likely to negatively influence Delhi’s air quality by the weekend. By October 2, air quality is likely to slide to “the lower end of the poor category,” he said.

The monsoon started to recede from Rajasthan on Monday. He is expected to withdraw from the rest of northwest India by Thursday, according to an official with the Indian meteorological department.
