New Delhi:
Air India has withdrawn job offers for about 180 trainee cabin crew members amid the economic downturn in the aviation sector due to the coronavirus pandemic, airline officials said on Saturday.
“The airline has decided to withdraw the job offers for approximately 180 trainees who were to join as cabin crew after completing their training as the aviation sector has been severely affected due to the coronavirus pandemic “said an airline official.
In a letter sent to one of these interns on July 6, the airline said: “Given the current aviation scenario, it would not be possible for Air India to provide you with additional training to hire your services.”
The letter also stated: “In view of the above reasons, which are beyond the company’s control, it was decided to end your training program and to renounce the offer of employment with immediate effect.”
He added that the bank guarantees provided by individual trainees when they joined were returned.
Asked about the issue, an Air India spokesperson said that these are internal matters on which the airline does not wish to comment.
The aviation industry has been significantly affected due to travel restrictions imposed in India and other countries in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. All airlines in India have taken cost-cutting measures such as salary cuts and layoffs in order to conserve cash flow.
India resumed domestic passenger flights from May 25 after an interval of two months due to the coronavirus-induced lockout.
However, airlines have only been authorized to operate a maximum of 45% of their domestic flights prior to COVID. The occupancy rate of Indian domestic flights has been around 50 to 60% since May 25.
Regular international passenger flights have been suspended in India since March 23.
