Kanpur police said on Saturday that a gangster associate Vikas Dubey who had been arrested in Maharashtra was “neither wanted nor named” in the ambush case in which eight police officers were killed.

Chief Police Superintendent Dinesh Kumar Prabhu said in a statement that Arvind, aka Guddan Ramvilas Trivedi (46), was arrested with his driver Sonu Tiwari by the Maharashtra Police’s Anti-Terrorism Brigade (ATS) in the morning, no was neither. sought or named in the event of encounter.

“This is to inform that it has emerged that the above defendants are former members of the gang of the fearsome gangster Vikas Dubey,” the statement said.

Trivedi’s role in the encounter is the subject of an in-depth investigation. The above defendants are neither named nor wanted in the Chaubeypur incident, the statement said.

However, there was no word on why the police released the photo of Trivedi with 14 other people, calling them active members of the Dubey gang and wanted in the massacre in the village of Bikru.

Maharashtra police on Saturday morning arrested Arvind and his driver in Thane, an ATS official.

Trivedi is believed to have been involved in numerous criminal cases with Dubey, including the 2001 murder of UP Minister Santosh Shukla, who was killed inside a police station.

The Uttar Pradesh government had announced a reward for the arrest of Trivedi.

After Kanpur’s ambush, Trivedi left his phone in a store near the village and drove to Madhya Pradesh with his driver, an official said on condition of anonymity.

From Datia in Madhya Pradesh, he went to Nashik, then to Pune and finally reached Thane, added the official.

Trivedi stayed in a friend’s house in Thane and monitored the news closely to take stock of the situation and the actions of the police.
