A man was shot dead in front of local officials today in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, following a dispute, police said, after which Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered the officials present to be suspended.

Jaiprakash, 46, was reportedly shot dead by Dhirendra Singh, a BJP worker who is believed to be close to party deputy Surendra Singh. A stampede followed after the shoot which was captured in a video.

The victim was reportedly shot dead during a meeting in Durjanpur village after an official called off a meeting over the allocation of ration shops due to a dispute between members who had gathered there, SP Devendra Nath told PTI news agency.

The meeting was held in a tent, where a large number of people gathered. Administration and police officials were also on site, local residents told PTI.

MP Surendra Singh confirmed that the accused heads the former BJP military unit in Ballia and said such an incident “can happen anywhere”.

A police case was registered against 15 to 20 people on the complaint of the victim’s brother. No arrests have yet been made.

Yogi Adityanath ordered the suspension of the sub-divisional magistrate, a senior police official and others soon after.
