Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan:

Seven workers have been killed and several others dead in northern Afghanistan after a gas explosion caused the collapse of a coal mine, an official said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in Samangan province, where similar disasters have been reported in the past.

Two workers were killed immediately when the mine collapsed, while five others were recovered by rescue teams overnight, said Sediq Azizi, spokesman for the provincial governor.

He added that 11 other workers were trapped inside.

“I don’t think we will find anyone alive because the mine is full of toxic gases,” said Azizi.

Several mining accidents have been reported in recent years in Afghanistan, with miners often working without appropriate equipment and safety training.

Last year, six miners were killed in a gas explosion at a coal mine in the impoverished Samangan province.
