Veteran comedian Jagdeep, best known for his roles in films such as Sholay, Purana Mandir and Andaz Apna Apna, died Wednesday at his Mumbai residence. He was 81 years old. “He died at 8:30 p.m. in his Bandra residence. He was not well because of age-related problems,” director Mehmood Ali, a close family friend, told PTI news agency. . Jagdeep is survived by his wife, daughters and sons, including actors Jaaved Jaaferi and television personality Naved Jafri. Born as Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri, the legendary actor was popularly known as Jagdeep, his stage name. Among moviegoers, Jagdeep was better identified as Soorma Bhopali after the 1975 film by Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra Sholay, like Machchar from the 1984 film Purana Mandir and as Bankelal Bhopali (Salman Khan’s father) in the 1994 film by Salman and Aamir Khan Andaz Apna Apna. In 1988 Jagdeep also directed the film Soorma Bhopali based on his character of Sholay.
Actor Ajay Devgn mourned actor Jagdeep in a tweet, writing: “I heard the sad news of the disappearance of Jagdeep Saab. I always liked watching it on the screen. It brought so much joy to the public. Jagdeep intervened as a child artist in a 1951 film Afsana and also worked as a child actor in films such as Hum Panchi Ek Dal Ke, Aar Paar, Ab Dilli Door Nahin, Do Bigha Zamin and Munna. He became a prominent actor with films such as Bindiya, Bhabhi and Barkha. Jagdeep’s performance in the 1968 film Brahmachari established him as a comedian. Jagdeep also starred in several horror films, some of which include blockbuster films like the 1984 film Purana Mandir and 1985 3D Saamri.
Jagdeep was last seen in a 2012 movie Gali Gali Chor Hai, in which he played the role of a police officer. In the latter part of his career, Jagdeep has appeared in films such as Life Partner, Bombay To Goa and Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye. Jagdeep’s filmography of the 90s and 80s includes films such as Porte de Chine, Hasina Aur Nagina, Phool Aur Kaante, Insaan Bana Shaitan, Andaz Apna Apna, Shahenshah, Qurbani and Phir Wohi Raat , among others.
