Assam, Jorhat: a gang of 50 attacked, killed a man and left another seriously injured

Jorhat, Assam:

In a tragic incident on Saturday, a crowd of around 50 people attacked two young men in the Jorhat district of Assam after the duo, who were on a two-wheeler returning from a day trip in the middle of the isolation of the coronavirus struck two women near a tea garden.

Debashish Gogoi, 23, died of his injuries in the attack near the town of Mariani, while his friend, Aditya Das, survived and was transported to hospital with injuries serious. The two women suffered no serious injuries.

The two paid a brief visit to Gabhoru Parbat, a popular tourist site, police said before being attacked near the Gabhuro Pahar tea factory.

Residents said the crowd gathered almost immediately after the men “lightly” hit the women and started attacking them without any discussion, cause or confrontation.

“The crowd became so brutal that it did not even stop beating the youths even when Debashish’s father and sisters rushed in and tried to speak,” said a police official.

By the time the fury of the crowd subsided and Mr. Gogoi’s family was allowed to take him and his friend to a hospital in Jorhat, it was too late for him.

“By the time we arrived, the parents had already taken the two young people to the hospital and the crowd was dispersed,” said a police officer attached to the Deberpara police station, the closest to the incident.

“Four have been arrested in connection with the incident and investigations are under way,” added the police officer.

The shocking incident brings back painful memories of Abhijit Nath and Nilotpal Das, who were killed by a mob suspected of kidnapping children in June two years ago.

It also brings to mind the memories of Jhankar Saikia, who was beaten to death by a crowd of rickshaw drivers in Diphu in the Karbi Anglong district in July 2013.
