Gangtok:
An 82-year-old woman, a grandmother of three, has become Sikkim’s oldest paraglider, the State Paragliding Association announced on Saturday.
Dukmit Lepcha took to the skies on October 28 from a paragliding point near Aangi Monastery in Ranka, which is a small town 20 km from the capital Gangtok, according to sources.
The oldest paraglider registered by the Sikkim Paragliding Association before Dumkit Lepcha was a 68-year-old man, according to sources from the Sikkim Paragliding Association.
“This 82-year-old woman will inspire a lot to make Sikkim tourism a new adventure destination,” said Manoj Chettri, deputy director of adventure at the Sikkim tourism and civil aviation department.
Paragliding will be a whole new product for tourists and tour operators, he said.
“It was such a pleasant experience. I enjoyed it and no I was not afraid. My granddaughter, who is 17 years old came before me but she was a little afraid. I did not shake at all because I wanted to know what it was like to fly, ”Ms. Lepcha said.
She flew for nearly six minutes at an altitude of around 4,500 feet as her family, spectators and members of the Sikkim Paragliding Association cheered.
Ms Lepcha said it was not the first adventure sport she participated in and it would not be the last. In 2016, she scuba diving off the Andaman coast. Her next plan is cycling, Ms. Lepcha added.
