Havana:
Since the novel Coronavirus reached Cuba, a large cardboard box with arms and legs can be seen tottering in a Havana suburb, jumping into the bakery or butchers, or browsing the newsstand.
It was Feridia Rojas, 82, who decided to build and carry mobile homes to protect themselves from the virus which is particularly deadly for seniors in a country where personal protective equipment is not sold in stores .
“I am at home and you?” reads a message on his box, in a witty wink to the slogan of the Cuban coronavirus “Stay at home”.
The widow, whose daughters both live in the United States, said that with no one to shop for food, she had to find a way to do it safely by herself, illustrating the ingenuity and humor for which Cubans are famous for.
“I was worried about asymptomatic cases that could cough as I passed,” she said. “So I thought, I’ll make a little house out of a cardboard box and carry it.”
The retired Cuban nurse recovered the box from the pharmacy in her neighborhood of Palatino and cut holes for her arms and a window for her face which she covered with clear plastic.
In addition, she glued boxes of cakes to make it look more like a house with a roof than an apartment building with a flat roof.
“She is very creative,” chuckled neighbor Zayda Echemendia, adding that Rojas always helped locals with injections at home and others.
Although her mobile home may be less necessary as the Cuban epidemic appears to have been brought under control, Rojas said she still provides the comic relief needed.
“In the midst of this pandemic, this stress and this anxiety all the time, my little house makes people laugh,” she said.
