A very strong earthquake struck southern Mexico on Tuesday, shaking buildings in the center of Mexico City hundreds of miles away and sending hundreds of people to flee their homes on the streets.

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.7, while the Mexico Seismological Institute put its strength at 7.1. Earthquakes of such magnitude can be devastating.

The earthquake was centered in the southern state of Oaxaca, said the Mexican institute.

Witnesses to Reuters in Mexico City saw no initial signs of injury or damage.
