Three women and a man were reportedly stripped and beaten by a mob of around 50 who accused them of practicing witchcraft, then marched naked throughout the village of Garhwa district in Jharkhand, police said on Friday.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident that took place Thursday evening in the village of Narayanpur in Jharkhand, as a search is underway to arrest the others, they said.

“The incident took place around 10 pm. Shortly after receiving information, a team was sent to the village and it was found that around 50 people were present at the scene. Two people were arrested for that the others were running away, “subdivision policeman Brahmin Tutti told PTI news agency.

“The police first provided clothes for the women and the man, after which they brought the two defendants – Ravi Kumar and Vasudev – to Sadar police station,” he said.

Strict measures will be taken against those involved in the incident, the officer said.

The women and the man were stripped and beaten after two daughters of a Bali Rajwar, a villager, fell ill, police said.

Bali Rajwar’s family members, along with Vikas Kumar Saw, Bablu Ram, Rajad Paswan, Ravi Kumar Ram and Raju Ram, among others, allegedly stripped the three women, beat them and then exhibited them throughout the region, according to the report. the case filed by the police. .

Some villagers tried to intervene and stop the group, but were attacked and verbally threatened, police said.

Narayanpur Ward Councilor Sivasagar Das said he also tried to pacify the crowd, but no one paid attention.

“We have information that around 50 people were involved in the incident and an investigation is underway,” said Rajiv Kumar, the inspector in charge of Sadar police station.

“The culprits will in no case be spared. The fleeing people will be arrested soon,” he said.
