A court has sentenced 15 people to life imprisonment in a triple murder case in the Fatehpur district of Uttar Pradesh.

District government attorney Sukhdev Gupta said on Tuesday: “District and additional session judge Ajay Kumar on Monday sentenced 15 defendants to life imprisonment and also fined them 15,000 rupees each. in a triple murder case that was reported 24 years ago. “

The incident took place on August 6, 1996 near a private bus stop in the Khaga area of ​​the district, when a group of people demanded Rs 20 as “goonda tax” per private bus operating unit and another group said they would collect the tax. and started shooting, which resulted in the deaths of Sunil Singh, Ramniranjan Singh and Rakesh Singh, ”Gupta said.

Based on complaints from members of the first group, murder and attempted murder cases were filed against 18 people, while the other group recorded one attempted murder against eight people, the government lawyer said. .

The court acquitted eight defendants for lack of evidence. Fifteen members of the second group were found guilty by the court, Gupta said.

Of the fifteen accused in the second group, two died during the hearing, while one was acquitted, he added.
